City of Flamenco, in the heart of Jerez
Jerez is the universally acknowledged reference point for Flamenco,
that gypsy-Andalusian art, whose history can be traced as far back as
the beginning of the 18 th century, but which has since buried its roots
deep within the history of Andalusia.
Very much aware of its importance to the city, the Town Council of
Jerez, through the Town Planning Department, and in collaboration with
the Institute of Culture of Jerez, promotes the City of Flamenco in
order to popularise the art as the finest expression of Andalusian culture.
The City of Flamenco is one of the most ambitious projects
of the Town Council of Jerez, and its aim is to regenerate the historic
centre of the city. It will take the form of different spaces and buildings
in Plaza Belén, in the heart of the medieval city, and the centre
of the ancient Andalusian medina, equidistant between the two most important
flamenco quarters of the town: Santiago and San Miguel.
The hereditary importance of flamenco, its liveliness of spirit so
essential to cultural productions of both Andalusia and Spain in general,
and not forgetting its strong links to the more popular sectors, means
it deserves to be promoted to a starring role, with as great an effort
as possible, within the arts of Spain.
